1916. Inspector Marmion and Sergeant Keedy are assigned to the case when the body of a young conscientious objector is found bludgeoned to death. Entertaining and a good read.
Every Marston series I have read has always entertained me-this novel was no different.
This is the ninth book that have read authored by Edward Marstin and I still think he is an excellent author.
A great read plenty of detail.
The premise is extraordinary. The protagonist is continually born and then dies. Sometimes the death occurs soon after birth - in one event she is still born, in another she attemps to assinate Hitler, in other she dies in the Blitz while rescuing victims from bomb sites. We see how her mother is harrowed by the early deaths of her baby, and watch the changes that occur in the family as time and events alter over the life of the main character and the coming of the Second World War to Britain and Germany.
Once the reader realises what is happening, the story is wonderful and the plotting and flow of story gripping. It did take me a few births and deaths to understand what was happening, but it is worth the struggle because the writing is marvelous and the characterisations well drawn. I would recommend this novel and its writer, Kate Atkinson, to anyone in search of literary writing of the first order. I liked it well enough to buy another of Kate Atkinson's works "Behind the Scenes at the Museum" which I am currently reading with great enjoyment.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book which gave an in sight into the feelings of the neighbourhood about those who did not wish to become soldiers. The story was very absorbing with an intersting twist at the end.
I read just about anything Marston writes. I love this new series, except for one little thing. If you read the Railway Detective series you may see similarities in the two series. This is not a bad thing, but is like reading two series for one. Another thing I like about Marston is that he is not verbose and redundant. In some authors of historical mystery, they seem to rehash and restate the obvious again and again as they are getting paid for by the word...lets stretch this out.
