"Where would the zombie apocalypse originate? This gives a fab twist on the zombie story. Full of action..." Kittybuzz, Review.

Who would ever have imagined in their wildest dreams that the End of Days would start with the discovery of the earthly remains of some long-dead king underneath a car park in Leicester, of all places?

On that fateful day, little did the archaeologists involved in the dig realise that they were about to unleash on their fellow man an ancient evil long since contained in the bottom of that very pit. It was an evil so terrible that no mention of it would be found in any document, and its true nature known only to a select few. Too late to save themselves, the inhabitants of that city realised that not only were the recently deceased reanimating but they were doing so with a renewed zeal for life, and the taste of living flesh.

NB - this is NOT a sequel to ‘The Common Cold A Zombie Chronicle’, The sequels are called 'The Common Cold A Zombie Chronicle - Cabin Fever', 'The Common Cold A Zombie Chronicle - Dez Rez', and 'The Common Cold A Zombie Chronicle - Playing God' and are also available on .

Short version: for 99 cents, you can't really beat it, but it does have some issues. For the most part, the editing and mechanical construction are very good indeed, although there are some of the usual sound-alike errors, but not many and not bad. It's not a classic of the genre, and it's not a page turner, but it did hold my interest and it did move along fairly well, all things considered.

The action takes place in 125 AD, 1943 Paris, and just recently in Leicester when they turfed Dick III out from under that car park, which is what sets off the whole train of modern-day events.

The story jumps back and forth between the three time periods, which does lay out the backstory, but is somewhat choppy and disjointed.

Apparently, there's this trans-national, pan-religious secret society that has, from the dawn of human history been charged with containing zombie outbreaks, securing the highly infectious remains, and supressing all evidence of the plague, outbreaks, and secret society. I had some suspension of disbelief issues with that whole secret society thing - why not just treat the whole zombie plague as a public health issue and educate the public about the proper actions to take?

I understand that the author is trying to do something a little bit different, but it doesn't quite come off as well as it might.

Also found it distracting that the warriors in 125 AD used modern phraseology and colloquialisms. Some of the modern-day dialog and narrative feel forced and stilted, but again, it's not bad.

It's got a lot of good going on for it, the issues not withstanding. It's worth a look.

Finally a prequel with some depth and thought process behind it and by some I mean tons of fun in the form of interesting information counterbalanced with war backdrops transformed over time by geographical and political changes with a little help from the virus. Loved how the outbreak was integrated into the major events in history, authors writing skill made it so seem less you would think it the truth. I can't wait for the next one hope it hits as fast as the infection!
I really enjoyed the story line jumping to the different eras. The historical stuff was as interesting as the modern day information. The author likes to keep in touch with his audience. David seems to be an amazing person and his writing just flows so well. I enjoy reading all of his work and will continue to follow him in the future. Keep up the good work, David!
A young, careless, archaeologist unleashes a deadly virus into our atmosphere as well as passing it on from person to person which then spreads at nightmare speed through Leicester and to London. The fact its Richard the III dig site makes it seem even more realistic to us as the reader. Davids characters are also believable and this story whisks you away on a fast paced zombie journey.

A brilliant element to the plot is an ancient order who were created hundreds of years ago keep the secret of this deadly virus and its history. Roberts even shows us some flashbacks in time at the discovery of this virus and how the order was born and its origins during World war 2 and beyond. This is a refreshing twist to the zombie norm and fantastic read with an even better breathtaking ending so you so need to read this if you love your zombies and apocalypse style genres.
