When the Yuma prison was built in 1875, some of the worst prisoners in the west were used to help build it. By the time it opened in 1876, only eight of the men were left alive to be locked into the first two cells. This story of fiction follows one who escaped.
Joseph “Snake” Wilton was fighting his own racial war. A half-breed, he had killed dozens of men before he made the mistake of injuring one who was white. On the night he is to be locked into the cell he helped build, Snake escapes.
Snake is young, strong, and angry, ready to kill as many white men as it takes to be free. Itza-Chu, an old Indian, he met in a drunk tank, told him the legend of ghost warriors who can help him find inner peace. It is the inner battle between his red and white halves that he must win.

Ghost Warrior 1 is a short story packed with more intense fast moving action than a lot of full length novels.
It comes with a violence warning, I'm very glad I didn't let that scare me off. I don't like violence and will not watch anything violent, but this is not random or senseless violence. It is the result of Ouray fighting for his life in prison and later for his survival in the desert. Ouray has been a victim of racial prejudice his entire life. I quickly sympathized with him and was rooting for him to reach the canyon where he feels he will finally find peace in his life. I understood why he did the things he did. Ghost Warrior 1 is fast moving, intense, powerful and never a dull moment. Excellent writing as usual by J.R. Biery she is never a disappointment.
I am a huge fan of J R Biery' s. I have never been disappointed in any of Biery' s books.Not until reading this story. From the beginning I was drawn in by the subject matter. Having seen the cliff dwellers homes in Mesa Verde. I was so excited to begin reading Ghost Warrior I. However I was not prepared for it to end as soon as it did. That was my huge disappointment. It was over before I got settled in. It took longer to get my drink , snacks and pillows ready. Then it did to read the whole story. I hope this not a trend for all writers.
